Description
Civil War .58 Caliber Cartridge Box with SNY Plate
Original Civil War regulation .58 caliber infantry cartridge box bearing a handsome oval “SNY” (State of New York) brass breast plate affixed to the outer flap. The box retains both original roller buckles on the bottom with their corresponding closure tabs intact—an increasingly difficult feature to find complete.
Constructed of black bridle leather over a wood block form, the outer flap shows honest field wear with attractive crazing and a rich, untouched patina consistent with period service. The SNY plate remains well seated, displaying a pleasing mellow tone with strong definition to the letters.
Interior tins are no longer present, but the box remains structurally solid and displays beautifully. Boxes of this type were issued to New York volunteer infantry regiments and would have seen service throughout the major campaigns of the war, including the Eastern Theater where many New York units were heavily engaged.
A classic and desirable example of a New York-marked infantry accoutrement.
