Description
Civil War Artillery Captain’s Shoulder Straps
Excellent pair of Civil War U.S. artillery captain’s shoulder straps, constructed with rich red wool fields bordered by unusually scarce gilt bullion tape trim rather than the more commonly encountered jaceron wire bullion borders. Each strap retains its original double captain’s bars, identifying the rank of Captain — the officer typically entrusted with command of an artillery battery in the field.
The distinctive flat bullion tape edging gives the set a particularly elegant wartime appearance and represents a less frequently encountered variation among Civil War officer insignia. The deep artillery red fields contrast beautifully against the mellowed gilt embroidery, producing exceptional display quality.
As battery commanders, artillery captains carried immense battlefield responsibility, directing gun crews under fire while maneuvering some of the most decisive weapons on the Civil War battlefield. From Gettysburg to Petersburg, Union artillery officers often stood in the thickest fighting, coordinating fire that could determine the outcome of an engagement.
A scarce and visually striking pair of original Civil War artillery officer shoulder straps with strong untouched character and outstanding eye appeal.
