Description

Civil War “Battle Rattle”

Wooden ratchet-style noisemaker, commonly referred to as a “battle rattle,” of the type associated with mid-19th century militia musters, political rallies, and patriotic demonstrations during the Civil War era. Constructed of hardwood with a pivoting tongue, designed to produce a loud clacking report when swung, these instruments were used to generate noise, signal, or enthusiasm in both civilian and quasi-military settings.

This example survives in solid, untouched condition with a rich, dry surface and honest wear consistent with age and handling. The form is classic, with elongated body and internal striker intact. Pieces of this nature are seldom encountered and are often misidentified, yet period references and surviving examples firmly place them within the soundscape of wartime gatherings and home front fervor.
