Civil War Era “Oreo” Pattern Thermoplastic Union Case 

A scarce and highly desirable Civil War-era thermoplastic photographic case commonly known among collectors as the “Oreo” pattern due to its distinctive circular form and decorative raised motifs. This attractive example features a striking floral rosette design centered on both covers, surrounded by radiating petals and bordered by a finely molded scalloped edge. 

Manufactured from gutta-percha or thermoplastic material during the mid-nineteenth century, cases of this type were prized for their durability and decorative appeal. The rich dark brown coloration remains attractive, and the molded details retain excellent definition throughout. The floral motif is particularly crisp, creating a visually appealing display piece even when empty. 

The interior retains its original brass mat and preserver assembly, ready to house a tintype, or melainotype. The matching interior surfaces remain solid and well-preserved, with no significant losses to the decorative components. The case closes properly and presents very well overall.
