Grand Army of the Republic Silvered Coffin Plaque

Memorial to D. Webster Goodrich, Died August 19th, 1888

A handsome and deeply symbolic Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) funerary coffin plaque, crafted of silver-plated sheet metal and beautifully engraved for D. Webster Goodrich, who passed away August 19th, 1888, aged 51 years. These plaques were affixed to the exterior lid of a veteran’s coffin for GAR funerals and represent some of the most personal commemorative objects associated with Union veterans.

GAR coffin plates were produced only for deceased Union veterans and were used during funerals conducted under the auspices of local GAR posts. Surviving examples—especially personalized, engraved versions—are increasingly scarce. They serve as both funerary artifacts and as powerful links to the postwar veteran community that shaped late-19th-century American memory of the Civil War.

This example is exceptional in both condition and quality of engraving, representing a high-grade commemorative piece honoring a Union soldier who continued his associations with fellow veterans long after the war through participation in the GAR.
