Description
Civil War-Era Surgical Instrument Set with Shell and Ebony Handles
An impressive mid-19th century surgical instrument set, retaining its original velvet- and silk-lined leather case. The kit includes an assortment of finely crafted amputation and general surgical tools, several bearing marbleized shell-pattern or ebony grips, with several makers’ marks including Adams of Albany N.Y. indicating extended use and period additions. All are noted 19th-century cutlers and surgical tool suppliers.
The instruments represent the range of implements carried by a field surgeon, including scalpels, forceps, scissors, probes, and saws. The folding scalpels with shell handles are a hallmark of higher-quality sets.
The case, though showing age and wear, remains in very good condition overall and retains its rich red velvet interior and faded rose silk lining, with closure mounts still intact. A wonderful example of a medical kit from one of the most defining periods of American medicine, when battlefield innovation met necessity.
Contents Include:
- Folding tortoiseshell scalpels and bistouries
- Amputation and bone saws
- Scissors, forceps, and probes
- Tweezers and needle holders
- Original red velvet and silk-lined case
- Pair of original paper packets accompany the kit containing surgical suture needles
Condition: Instruments exhibit light oxidation and patina consistent with age; case retains excellent form with minor interior fading.
A highly desirable and display-worthy example of a Civil War-period surgical set—illustrating a nice assortment of tools of 19th-century battlefield medicine.
