Description
Civil War Era Tin Cup
A classic Civil War period tinned iron cup, measuring approximately 3 inches in height, exhibiting the utilitarian form commonly associated with soldier-issued or camp-use drinking vessels. The cylindrical body is fitted with a simple applied strap handle, secured by solder, consistent with mid-19th century manufacture.
The cup retains a pleasing, untouched surface with a soft gray patina throughout, showing honest age and use. Areas of oxidation and light surface wear are present, along with scattered abrasions and interior utensil marks, all consistent with field use. The handle attachment shows period solder reinforcement, and the base displays typical wear from use.
Of particular interest are faintly scratched initials appear to be visible along the interior wall, suggesting personal use by a soldier. The underside bears an old collection marking “Civil War” in wax pencil which has undoubtedly been present for decades, adding to its history of prior collections.
A scarce and desirable example of Civil War field tinware, offering strong character and authentic period wear.
