Description

Civil War-Era Wooden Musical Instrument in Original Marbleized Storage Box

An attractive mid-19th century wooden musical instrument housed in its original marbleized paper-covered storage box. Crafted of turned hardwood and fitted with brass-mounted components, the instrument retains a pleasing untouched appearance and is accompanied by its scarce period case.

The original box remains lined with its blue paper interior and exhibits decorative horn inlays applied to the exterior. Several of these inlays remain intact, while others display losses and wear consistent with age and long-term use. Despite these imperfections, the case survives as an exceptional period accessory and greatly enhances the display and historical appeal of the ensemble.

Portable musical instruments such as this were common throughout the antebellum and Civil War periods, finding use in military camps, aboard ships, in parlors, and during social gatherings. Their compact construction made them well suited for travel, while their music provided welcome entertainment during long periods away from home.

Complete examples retaining their original fitted storage boxes are increasingly difficult to encounter today. The survival of both the instrument and its original marbleized case offers a wonderful glimpse into the musical culture of mid-19th century America and presents as a highly decorative and appealing display piece.
