Description

Civil War Glass Mustard Bottle

Excavated Camp Example

Original Civil War–era glass mustard bottle, recovered from a documented Civil War campsite and professionally tumbled clean following excavation. This example features the classic mid-19th-century utilitarian form associated with prepared mustard and condiment storage supplied to soldiers through civilian contractors and sutlers.

The bottle is free-blown with subtle irregularities consistent with period manufacture and displays a light aqua tint typical of Civil War glass. Surface wear, base character, and overall form are fully consistent with mid-19th-century production. Mustard bottles were common personal and camp-use items, valued for their ability to improve the otherwise bland soldier ration.

A genuine field-used Civil War camp artifact, representing the everyday material culture of the soldier beyond arms and accoutrements.
