Description
Civil War Hotchkiss Fuse Adapter — Star Fort, Winchester
A fine excavated example of a Hotchkiss artillery fuse adapter, recovered from the Star Fort defenses at Winchester, Virginia. This brass adapter was threaded into the nose of a Hotchkiss shell to receive a paper time fuse or percussion fuse, allowing precise detonation upon firing.
The adapter shows the deep green patina typical of long-term ground recovery, with clear threading and a slightly flanged top. The Star Fort site saw intense fighting during the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, making this a highly desirable relic from one of the war’s most significant artillery positions.
A tangible piece of Civil War artillery history—perfect for display or to accompany a complete Hotchkiss shell in a collection.
