Civil War “Housewife” Sewing Kit

A fine example of a Civil War-era soldier’s “housewife” or sewing kit, this hand-sewn roll-up pouch was a vital personal item carried by many Union and Confederate troops alike. The exterior is fashioned from a sturdy, plaid cotton fabric in period-consistent hues of blue, tan, and cream, accented with brown cotton edging and integral tie closures. When unrolled, the interior reveals several wool flannel needle and thread pockets designed to hold essential mending supplies—needles, pins, thread, and buttons—allowing soldiers to repair uniforms and gear in the field. These humble kits were often made by loved ones at home and sent to the front, serving as both a practical necessity and a token of care. This example remains in very good condition, showing only minor wear from use. A poignant reminder of the everyday struggles faced by soldiers beyond the battlefield.
