Attractive Civil War period New York state button featuring the familiar perched eagle above shield motif with the arched “EXCELSIOR” designation across the top. The reverse retains its original shank and is backmarked “HORSTMANN BR’S & ALLIEN N.Y.,” a desirable period manufacturer’s mark associated with quality gilted military buttons.

This fine two-piece brass example displays crisp detail to the eagle and shield with a warm untouched patina and traces of original gilt remaining. A classic New York state button that would make an excellent addition to any Civil War collection, state display, or identified New York grouping.
