Description
Civil War Officer’s Field-Used Gauntlets
A superb and increasingly scarce pair of original Civil War officer’s gauntlets, exhibiting honest field use and classic wartime construction. Fashioned of high-quality leather with extended cuffs designed to protect the wrist and forearm while mounted, the gloves retain a rich, mellow patina developed through age and service. The form and tailoring are entirely consistent with privately purchased officer’s equipment, as regulation issue gauntlets were seldom provided and typically acquired at the officer’s own expense.
The gloves show expected wear from active use, with supple leather, natural creasing, and areas of handling that speak to time in the saddle rather than post-war preservation. The elongated cuffs—likely once lined—flare elegantly, a defining characteristic of cavalry and mounted officer gauntlets of the period. Stitching remains largely intact, and the overall presentation is both attractive and authentic.
The market is saturated with later fraternal and veteran organization pieces dating to the 1870s–1880s. These post-war items—often produced for GAR and similar groups—frequently mimic wartime forms but differ in construction, materials, and wear patterns. Many are routinely altered and misrepresented today as Civil War period artifacts. The present example is not one of those later productions, but rather a genuine wartime piece!
Such gauntlets were essential for mounted officers, offering protection against reins, brush, and the rigors of campaign life, while also serving as a subtle mark of status. Surviving examples with clear wartime character are notably difficult to locate, as leather items were heavily used and seldom preserved.
A display-worthy pair of officer’s gauntlets, embodying the functional elegance and hard service of Civil War cavalry leadership.
