Civil War Period Snare Drum
Original Calfskin Heads and Brass Tack Decoration
A fine and completely original mid-19th century rope-tension military field drum, retaining both of its natural calfskin drumheads and woven rope tension cords. The single-ply wooden shell exhibits a rich, warm patina with decorative brass tacks forming a stylized floral or sunburst motif—an embellishment often found on early war or pre-war militia drums.
Both counterhoops are original, painted black with evidence of age-related wear, and the original hemp tension ropes remain in place, secured with simple leather ears for tightening. The shell measures approximately 16”wide x 13” tall due to tension on the heads, originally 16” x16”, a standard size for Union and Confederate infantry and militia units during the Civil War period.
This drum’s construction—thin shell, tack decoration, and rawhide heads—suggests manufacture circa 1840–1865, likely for state militia use prior to or during the early years of the Civil War. The absence of stencil decoration (e.g., regimental insignia or Federal eagle) is consistent with Confederate or privately purchased militia examples, many of which were locally made or imported by sutlers.
A highly appealing and untouched example of a wartime field drum, exhibiting excellent originality, age patina, and character.
