Civil War Pocket Travel Mirror with Swivel Lid

A classic personal effect of the Civil War soldier, this compact pocket mirror features a thin, oval form with a hinged swivel lid designed to protect the glass when not in use. Constructed of a warm, gilt-toned brass or tinned metal shell, the exterior shows a pleasing, untouched patina consistent with field carry and long-term age. The lid rotates smoothly along its seam, a practical design allowing the user to open and position the mirror while shaving or attending to daily hygiene in camp.

Such mirrors were common yet essential items, often privately purchased and carried in haversacks or knapsacks, reflecting the soldier’s need to maintain some degree of personal order amid campaign life. Survivors with intact lids and honest wear, as seen here, remain increasingly difficult to find.

A humble but evocative piece of the soldier’s daily routine.
