Civil War Shoulder Scales

Description
Civil War Shoulder Scales
A matched pair of Civil War-era brass shoulder scales, of the regulation pattern worn by Federal infantry and artillery enlisted men and non-commissioned officers. These decorative yet functional accoutrements were designed to protect the shoulder while presenting a polished military appearance on dress occasions.
Each example retains its original domed brass boss and articulated scale plates, showing the classic overlapping “feathered” construction. The brass surfaces exhibit an attractive, mellow patina with light wear consistent with age and use, having toned naturally from their once bright finish.
Both scales are lacking their original under pinnings. Despite this, the scales display very well from the face and remain a desirable representative set for display or restoration.
An increasingly scarce piece of Civil War uniform hardware, offering strong visual appeal and solid period character.
