Description

Civil War Soldier’s Named Stencil Plate – Massachusetts

Original Civil War–period personal identification stencil plate, constructed of thin sheet brass, bearing an oval name stencil for “F. L. Whitney.” This type of stencil was a common soldier’s accoutrement, used to mark clothing, knapsacks, haversacks, blankets, and other personal equipment for identification within company and regimental service.

The stencil exhibits clear period wear and oxidation consistent with field use, with the name remaining legible within its original oval border. Such named stencils are scarce survivors, as they were lightweight, utilitarian items easily lost or discarded during service.
