Description

Civil War Springfield Model 1861 Rifle-Musket with Socket Bayonet and Original Sling

An exceptionally fine, complete example of the iconic U.S. Model 1861 Springfield rifle-musket—the primary infantry longarm of the Civil War—retaining its original bayonet and leather sling.

Standard configuration, .58 caliber, 40 in. round barrel with crisp “V / P” proof marks at the breech and clear 1861 date on the top flat. Lock plate sharply marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” with the spread-wing eagle and matching 1861 date behind the hammer; mechanics excellent. Steel furniture throughout with smooth, bright surfaces and only the lightest age toning.

Walnut stock remains in excellent condition, showing strong edges, minimal handling marks, and a well-defined inspector’s cartouche opposite the lock. Original steel ramrod present. Accompanied by its regulation U.S. socket bayonet, marked “U.S.” on the blade, and its complete period leather sling, supple and intact with deep, untouched patina.

A truly high-grade, fully complete Model 1861—impressively preserved and increasingly scarce in this condition.
