Civil War U.S. Cavalry Bit – Marked “U.S. Arsenal”

An excellent example of a Civil War-era U.S. Cavalry curb bit, forged in iron and crisply stamped “U.S. Watervliet ARSENAL” along the cheek piece. These bits were standard government issue for Union cavalry troopers and were produced under contract at federal arsenals for distribution to mounted units in the field.

This regulation pattern features the distinctive “U.S.” insignia on both cheek bosses and a high-port mouthpiece designed for strength and communication between rider and horse. The metal surface retains a smooth, untouched patina with light, honest wear consistent with age and wartime service.

A well-marked and classic example of Union cavalry equipment—an essential addition to any Civil War artifact collection.
