Civil War U.S. Eagle Breast Plate

(Non-Excavated)

“U.S.” carved on back!

Excellent example of a regulation U.S. Army infantry accoutrement plate, ca. 1861–1865, featuring the spread-winged Federal eagle clutching arrows and olive branch in high relief on a rolled brass face with an attractive untouched patina. The lead-filled back has the letters US lightly in sizes into the reverse, as well as the soldiers’ initials and some purposeful carving, and some abrasions that chase the rim edge of the plate (purpose, unknown) retains both original iron attachment loops. Face exhibits crisp detail and pleasing mellow brass tone with only light age toning from storage. These plates were worn centered on the soldier’s leather crossbelt above the cartridge box and served both a decorative and symbolic purpose in the Federal uniform system. A fine, complete, non-excavated specimen of one of the most iconic Union insignia of the Civil War.

Comes housed in a display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
