Scarce Civil War period U.S. Navy officer’s cap insignia for a Midshipman, executed in finely embroidered gold bullion on a dark blue wool ground. The device features the distinctive fouled anchor surrounded by a richly worked laurel wreath, displaying the elegant hand embroidery and high-quality bullion work associated with wartime naval officer insignia.

Midshipman insignia are encountered far less frequently than their Army counterparts, particularly in untouched embroidered form retaining strong definition to the wreath and anchor.
