Civil War “Union Knife Co.” Soldier’s Folding Mess Set, ca. 1861–1865
Fine example of a wartime folding combination eating utensil consisting of a steel knife blade and brass spoon folding into dark wood grips with nickel-silver bolsters. The knife tang is clearly stamped “UNION KNIFE CO.” Of Naigatuck, CT.”
This manufacture the “Union Knife Company,” was a well-known Connecticut cutler supplying both the civilian and military markets during the Civil War. Complete with honest period patina and smooth, functional pivots. A classic example of the type of personal mess gear carried by Union soldiers in the field.
