Colonial Mourning Shoe Buckles

 

Rare original non-excavated pair of colonial shoe buckles constructed of jet and gold over iron, dating to the 1770 – 1810 period. The Jet is cut to gem form and was popular in the 1700’s through the Victorian era.  Jet is derived from wood that has changed under extreme pressure and therefore fossilized. Beautiful pair.
