Colt Model 1860 Army with Ivory Grips and Slim Jim Holster
Fine Civil War period Colt Model 1860 Army percussion revolver, .44 caliber, displaying an especially attractive set of period ivory grips. Matching serial number 112,442 is visible on the major components shown, manufactured squarely within the Civil War period. The revolver has an appealing, smooth metal surfaces and a pleasing dark brown patina.
The one-piece ivory grip is particularly striking, showing rich age coloration with pronounced natural grain and checking. The brass trigger guard retains a mellow, untouched patina. The loading lever has undergone a professional splice repair, neatly executed and visually unobtrusive.
Accompanying the revolver is a handsome period Slim Jim holster, the classic close-fitting open-top style widely associated with percussion revolvers of the mid-19th century. This example is especially attractive, with extensive hand-tooled floral and scalloped decoration following the contours of the holster. The tooling remains strong and well defined, while the reddish-brown leather shows desirable age, surface crazing and honest wear.
The Colt Model 1860 Army was one of the quintessential military revolvers of the Civil War. The combination of a Civil War-production Colt Army, ivory grips and an unusually decorative Slim Jim holster gives this rig exceptional visual presence, making a very handsome and highly displayable Civil War Colt ensemble.
