A striking pairing featuring an display photo of Confederate Major General Howell Cobb (1815–1868) alongside an original cover addressed to him in Washington City, D.C., bearing a clear Athens, Georgia postmark. Cobb—former Speaker of the U.S. House, Governor of Georgia, and one of the founders of the Confederate government—remains one of the most politically significant figures to join the Confederacy. 

 
The envelope is addressed in elegant period hand to “Hon. Howell Cobb, Washington City, D.C.” with a fine ATHENS, GA / MAR 10 circular cancel. The reverse flap is signed “Private M. A. Cobb,” adding an additional intriguing personal connection, likely a family member or associate forwarding private correspondence.
