Confederate Side Knife Constructed from a Reworked File
Scarce Southern-made side knife fashioned from a heavy iron file, exhibiting the rugged, utilitarian character so often associated with Confederate field production and soldier-made edged weapons of the Civil War period. The blade clearly retains evidence of its former life as a large metalworking file, with portions of the original cross-hatched file teeth still visible beneath the dark, untouched oxidation. The blade has been hand-ground into a spear-point fighting profile, displaying the asymmetry and crude efficiency typical of wartime Confederate adaptations.
Particularly noteworthy is the survival of an old paper identification label affixed to the blade reading simply “Rebel Knife…,” with a bunch of other barely legible information, an early attribution that accompanies the piece and adds to its long-collected character and authenticity. The tag remains an attractive period accompaniment rarely surviving with such artifacts.
The knife is mounted with a smooth wooden grip of pleasing age and patina secured over an iron tang with simple iron guard and ferrule. The handle shows a small age crack with an old glue repair, entirely consistent with the age and use of the piece and unobtrusive to display. The untouched surface throughout reflects decades of honest age, with no modern cleaning or enhancement.
An evocative and visually striking Confederate-style side knife embodying the resourcefulness and improvisation of Southern wartime manufacture. A strong display artifact with excellent eye appeal and undeniable battlefield character.
