Description

Cooper Firearms MFG. Co. Navy Percussion Revolver
Frankford, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Scarce .36 caliber Navy-size percussion revolver manufactured by the Cooper Firearms Manufacturing Company of Frankford, Philadelphia, one of the lesser-known but historically significant Northern arms makers active during the American Civil War.

The revolver is fitted with an octagonal barrel bearing a strong and legible top flat address:
“COOPER FIREARMS MFG. CO. FRANKFORD PHILA. PA. – PA. JAN. 7, 1851 APR. 25, 1854 S.L. JULY 30, 1860 – SEP. 1, 1863 SEP. 22, 1863”

These are the relevant patent dates associated with the Cooper revolver system, including the 1863 patents, firmly placing production within the Civil War period.
The six-shot cylinder and barrel assembly are marked with matching serial number “868,” consistent with known Cooper production practices. All iron surfaces retain a smooth, undisturbed gray-to-brown patina with light handling marks and age staining, showing no evidence of refinishing.

The revolver is fitted with a brass trigger guard and backstrap, both exhibiting a rich, untouched mustard-gold patina. The one-piece walnut grip is well-fitted, retaining good original contours with scattered handling marks and an attractive oil-darkened surface from age.
The revolver remains complete and original; mechanical condition functional.

Cooper Firearms revolvers were produced in relatively small quantities compared to Colt and Remington, and surviving examples—particularly in Navy caliber—are today considered scarce. These revolvers were marketed for civilian and potential military use during the wartime arms shortage and represent the entrepreneurial diversity of Union-era arms production.

Very good overall, with strong markings, matching visible numbers, pleasing untouched patina, and no major defects or alterations.
