Letter Written by Captain Charles Shier Jr. attesting to John Hatfield serving as a sergeant in his company – Shier is later Killed in Action at the Battle of Cedar Creek.
1864 Printed Memorial Roster for Company “K” of the 1st Michigan Cavalry Listing both Shier and Hatfield.
Charles Shier Jr., Ypsilanti, Michigan. Entered service in Company K, 1st Michigan Cavalry, as Captain, age 25. Commissioned Nov. 12,1863. Mustered Dec. 29,1863. Died Oct. 31,1864, of wounds received in action Oct. 19, 1864, at the battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia where four days after the battle Brevet Brigadier General George A. Custer was promoted to Brevet Major General.
John W. Hatfield of Niles, Mich. – Having this day enlisted in my Company of the 1s Mich Cav. I hereby promise to said John W. Hatfield to give him a position of Sergeant in my said company and better in proportion as he is making given recruits for me.”

The 1st, 5th, 6th, & 7th Michigan Cavalry Regiments Comprised the Michigan Cavalry Brigade under the leadership of Brevet Brigadier General George A. Custer.
