Description
E. Whitney U.S. Model 1841 Percussion “Mississippi Rifle”
1855 Dated Variation. An attractive example of the U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle manufactured by Eli Whitney, adapted in the “1855” variation to accept both long-range rear sights and saber bayonets. This configuration reflects mid-1850s Ordnance Department upgrades intended to extend the service life of the Model 1841 by improving bayonet versatility but not yet the long-range sight. Additionally, the barrel tank was lengthened, indicating that this was produced during the transition of these improvements.
The rifle retains its original .54 caliber barrel with period arsenal modifications, brass furniture, and walnut stock. A desirable variant connecting the original Mexican War-era Mississippi Rifle to its extended service in the decade leading up to the Civil War.
