Description

Early 19th Century American Eaglehead Sword by Horstmann of Philadelphia

An attractive example of a Federal era eagle head pommel sword, manufactured by W. H. Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia. The sword features a brass hilt with finely cast and chased floral motifs, a sweeping knucklebow, and a distinctive eagle’s head pommel—a classic patriotic American motif. The grip is fashioned with ribbed bone or ivory panels, showing age toning consistent with early 19th-century construction. The straight, single-edged blade retains etched floral and patriotic decoration, with period frosting visible in protected areas. The sword remains housed in its original brass scabbard, fitted with raised foliate mounts and suspension rings. The scabbard is stamped “HORSTMANN” along with an assembly number “422” below the throat fitting.

Eagle head pommel swords were popular private purchase sidearms for American officers and gentlemen from the late 18th century through the first half of the 19th century, bridging the post-Revolutionary War Federal period through the War of 1812 and into the pre-Civil War militia era. The Horstmann firm, established in Philadelphia in the 1820’s by William H. Horstmann, became one of the most prolific American outfitters of swords and military goods. Condition: Blade shows light surface wear and age spotting but retains strong etching. Brass hilt with an even mellow patina. Grip with expected age cracks. Scabbard complete with mounts, bearing honest wear and handling marks. A fine and representative example of an American eaglehead officer’s sword by a prominent Philadelphia maker.
