A scarce and highly desirable 19th-century razor strop, this example is Emerson’s Improved Elastic Razor Strap, manufactured and warranted by Charles M. Emerson of South Reading, Massachusetts.

 

Most notably, the strop retains its original printed paper instruction label, a feature rarely encountered due to routine use and wear. The label provides detailed period directions for sharpening and maintaining straight razors, including guidance on using the brown and dark sides of the strap, the application of oil, and care methods intended to extend the life of both the strop and the razor. 

 

Razor strops were an essential personal item for civilians and soldiers alike, and examples with complete instructions are increasingly difficult to obtain.
