Ames Sword Company Artifact!
Engraved Identification Name Tag — James T. Ames
A rectangular brass identification name tag engraved in elegant, flowing mid-19th-century script:
“J. T. Ames / Chicopee / Mass.”
The engraving is hand-cut and stylistically exemplifies pre-Civil War–era workmanship. The reverse shows two original attachment points, one intact and one torn through, indicating the tag was once affixed to a personal effect such as a saddle valise and worn for an extended period.
The inscription identifies James T. Ames of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Ames surname holds particular historical importance in Massachusetts during the mid-19th century. Directly associated with the Ames Manufacturing Company.
The world-famous sword manufacturers were headquartered in Chicopee, Massachusetts. By the 1840s–1860s, the firm—under the leadership of James Tyler Ames—had become one of the most significant American manufacturers of swords, edged weapons, artillery, and military ordnance, supplying the Union government extensively during the Civil War.
Comes housed in a riker display case with velvet and descriptive card.
