Engraved Underhammer Pistol Marked “KEENE, N.H.” 

 

Scarce and attractive American underhammer pistol, finely engraved and clearly marked on the top flat “KEENE, N.H.”—a desirable New England origin. This elegant single-shot percussion pistol represents the classic underhammer system, long favored for its simplicity, durability, and efficient ignition. 

 

The barrel and frame are embellished with flowing period scroll engraving, lending a refined appearance beyond the typically utilitarian nature of such arms. The metal surfaces retain a smooth, untouched patina, while the walnut grip exhibits a pleasing, darkened tone from age and handling. The octagonal barrel form is well executed, and the pistol maintains a balanced, quality profile throughout. 

 

Underhammer pistols were widely produced and used throughout New England in the antebellum period and remained in service into the Civil War era. Examples bearing clear geographic markings such as this—particularly with decorative engraving—are increasingly scarce and highly desirable among collectors. 

 

A strong and visually appealing example of a classic New England underhammer, combining regional character with fine decorative detail.
