Description
Fort Delaware Brick Fragment – Circa 1851–1856
An authentic architectural fragment from Fort Delaware, located at Delaware City, Delaware, one of the most significant coastal defense installations of the mid-19th century. Constructed beginning in the early 1850s as part of the Third System of U.S. coastal fortifications, Fort Delaware would later gain prominence during the Civil War as a major Union prison for Confederate soldiers.
This example consists of a period brick fragment dating to the original construction phase, circa 1851–1856. The piece exhibits the characteristic red clay composition and texture consistent with mid-19th century brick production. Retained in a stable, displayable condition, the fragment provides a tangible connection to the fabric of the fort itself.
Housed in a Riker-style display case with blue backing, the artifact is attractively presented with both a descriptive label and an internal identification tag affixed directly to the brick.
Material directly associated with major Civil War-era fortifications—particularly Fort Delaware, with its well-documented wartime use—remains highly collectible. This is a straightforward yet evocative relic representing the physical structure of one of the Union’s key defensive and prison sites.
