Description
French Two‑Band Musketoon
French two‑band musketoon chambered in .69 caliber and accompanied by its original sling. The brass barrel bands and side plate have aged to a rich brown tone from years of oxidation.
The musketoon bears small inspection markings including a tiny letter “H” in an oval stamped on the right side of the rear barrel band and the center of the side plate. The thirty‑inch barrel retains a side lug for mounting a saber bayonet.
Both sling swivels remain intact though the ramrod is missing. A small letter “V” within a circle appears stamped on the left side of the buttstock.
The initials “D.W.” have been punched into the right side of the buttstock using a stippling technique with a square nail. The stock shows scattered white and purple paint speckling with additional white paint visible along the underside of the buttstock, evidence of long service and later storage conditions.
Imported European arms were indispensable during the Civil War, particularly in the first years of the conflict when American arsenals and contractors could not immediately satisfy demand. Austria, France, Belgium, and Britain all contributed shoulder arms that were quickly pressed into service. These imports are valuable for the wide variety of markings, alterations, and issue histories they preserve.
