G.A.R. Belt and Plate 

 

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union who had served in the American Civil War. Measures 3 1/4 inches long by 2 inches wide.  Face of the plate is cast with a raised field of stars surrounding the letters “G.A.R.” on a stippled background.  This example retains nearly all its original nickel finish and is mounted on a period white cotton web belt with keeper device.  Classic example as worn by Union Veterans.  Nice high-grade example.
