General Ulysses S. Grant William Matthew Prior (1806–1873)

Reverse Glass Painting of General Ulysses S. Grant A patriotic reverse oil on glass portrait of General Ulysses S. Grant, executed by celebrated American folk artist William Matthew Prior (1806–1873). The work presents a bust-length depiction of Grant in uniform, painted in Prior’s distinctive bold yet direct style, with strong attention to facial detail and a flat, luminous background typical of his reverse glass technique. The painting is preserved in a period frame, and while a fracture is visible in the lower left-hand corner of the glass, it has been professionally stabilized, ensuring the integrity of the image. Despite this imperfection, the portrait retains excellent clarity and vibrant color, making it a fine example of Prior’s patriotic subject matter. Reverse glass portraits of Civil War figures are scarce, and representations of Grant are particularly sought after for their historical and artistic significance. This piece embodies both the folk tradition of mid-19th century America and the era’s reverence for its Union heroes.
