Georgia Confederate Conversion Musket with Bayonet

 

Model 1816 smoothbore musket altered to percussion in Georgia and accompanied by its original bayonet.

 

The lock bears partial Philadelphia contractor markings likely associated with Evans. The breech retains inspector stamps including U.S., P, and E. Some pitting is visible at the rear of the barrel from percussion cap use. The musket retains both sling swivels and its button‑tipped ramrod.

 

The accompanying socket bayonet bears a U.S. stamp near the socket and displays a crack along the socket seam. Confederate converted muskets with their bayonets remain highly desirable Civil War artifacts.

 

Converted Model 1816 muskets were among the most common stop-gap arms of the 1840s through early Civil War period. Originally produced as flintlocks, they were modernized through cone-in-barrel, side-bolster, or braised-bolster systems in order to extend their useful life after percussion ignition superseded the flint mechanism. These conversions are historically significant because they document the long service life of early U.S. military arms and the enormous demand for shoulder weapons in both state and national service.
