Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Slouch Hat

G.A.R. slouch hat pays tribute to the Union veterans of the Civil War who formed the Grand Army of the Republic in 1866. Made of 100% wool felt, the wide-brimmed black hat features a traditional slouch style and is adorned with a gilt brass GAR wreath insignia on the front band—symbolizing the loyalty and remembrance upheld by the organization. This style was commonly worn at GAR reunions, parades, and memorial ceremonies by aging Union veterans and their descendants. While not an original 19th-century artifact, this example closely mirrors the style and symbolism of those worn by Civil War veterans well into the early 1900s. Excellent vintage condition with minor wear; ideal for display, living history events, or as part of a Civil War collection.
