Grand Army of the Republic National Encampment Badge
27th National Encampment, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1893
Original two-piece bronze Grand Army of the Republic National Encampment badge issued for the 27th Annual Encampment held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1893. The badge features a classic G.A.R. suspension with a spread-wing eagle perched atop crossed cannons, symbolizing Union victory and veteran service. Suspended below is the regulation five-pointed G.A.R. star, retaining crisp detail and strong original surfaces.
The central medallion displays a finely rendered view of the Indiana State Capitol, encircled by the encampment legend, with “27th National Encampment,” “Indianapolis, Ind.,” and the date “1893,” along with the prominent “G.A.R.” designation. The badge retains its original dark bronze patina, with light, honest wear consistent with age and handling.
National encampment badges were worn by Union veterans during parades and official functions and remain an important relic associated with the post-war veteran movement. The Indianapolis 1893 encampment occurred at the height of the G.A.R.’s prominence and drew tens of thousands of veterans from across the country.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
