Harpers Ferry Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle

 

Model 1841 Mississippi rifle manufactured at Harpers Ferry and later rebored to .58 caliber. The rifle retains its long-range rear sight and a side lug for mounting a saber bayonet.

 

The lock is marked Harpers Ferry 1850. Steel components exhibit a dark charcoal gray patina while the brass furniture has aged to a pleasing yellow tone.

 

Additional markings including initials and decorative carvings appear on the stock, suggesting ownership by a specific soldier. Both sling swivels remain intact and the rifle retains its trumpet-shaped ramrod.

 

The Model 1841 Mississippi rifle gained fame during the Mexican War and continued to see service during the Civil War after being modified for Minié ball ammunition.

 

The Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle earned an enduring place in American arms history through its celebrated use in the Mexican War and its continued service during the Civil War alter many examples were altered to accept .58 caliber ammunition. Strongly associated with volunteer and elite formations, the pattern is admired for its handsome lines, substantial brass furniture, and reputation for accuracy. Good examples remain a staple of any advanced U.S. martial arms collection.
