Hiatt Handcuffs with Original Key

An outstanding and early pair of Hiatt-manufactured handcuffs fully representative of the restraint types in circulation during the Civil War era. Hiatt — founded in Birmingham, England — was one of the premier global makers of police and military restraints, and their products were widely imported and used in the United States throughout the period.

This example features the classic Hiatt swing-arm “D-shackle” design, with both bows clearly stamped: “HIATT” – “WARRANTED / WROUGHT” .

The handcuffs retain their original key, a highly desirable survival. The mechanism functions smoothly, and the iron shows a rich, untouched patina with the honest wear expected of a working 19th-century restraint.

Hiatt cuffs of this early form were widely used by military provost guards, civilian police, railroad authorities, and local sheriffs, making them an excellent addition to any Civil War–era or law-enforcement collection.
