John Brown Albumin Portrait Flyleaf – Life and Letters (1861 Issue)

A scarce and visually striking albumin portrait of abolitionist John Brown, issued as the mounted flyleaf frontispiece to The Life and Letters of Captain John Brown, published in London in 1861. The oval-format image presents Brown in a composed bust view, his intense gaze and ascetic features rendered with the soft tonal quality characteristic of early albumen printing. The mount retains its original printed facsimile inscription beneath the image reading, “Farewell God bless you / your friend / John Brown,” a well-known reproduction of his parting sentiment rather than a period autograph.

These portraits were inserted into early editions of the work shortly after Brown’s execution at Charlestown, Virginia on December 2, 1859, at a moment when his image was being widely disseminated and mythologized across both sides of the Atlantic. The London publication, edited by Richard D. Webb, played a key role in shaping Brown’s international legacy, particularly among abolitionist circles.

Condition reflects its origin as a bound-in leaf, with expected edge chipping and loss from removal, along with light toning and handling wear. Despite this, the portrait remains clear and well-centered, with strong contrast and excellent display presence.

An evocative and desirable Civil War–era image tied directly to one of the most polarizing and consequential figures of the period.
