Description

“Lincoln the Poet” – Limited Springfield Edition, 1945

A remarkable and scarce 1945 Springfield Edition of “Lincoln the Poet: Poems by Abraham Lincoln,” edited by The Poet Hunter. This limited-edition volume (one of only 300 copies) was sold exclusively by the A. Lincoln Book Shop, Chicago, and includes fragments of authenticated “sacred wood” from Abraham Lincoln’s life—embedded within the opening pages.

The mounted relics are identified as:

  • Oak roof-board from Lincoln’s Springfield home (1844–1861) – this fragment is lacking.
  • Floor sill walked upon by Lincoln for seventeen years
  • Oak rail split by Lincoln circa 100 years earlier
  • Walnut door wood from Edwards’ home, where Lincoln courted and married Mary Todd

These historic fragments were presented in 1943 to “The Poet Hunter” by Herbert Fay, then Keeper of Lincoln’s Tomb at Oakridge Cemetery. The left-hand page features Fay’s printed certification poem titled “Sacred Wood,” commemorating Lincoln’s life and legacy in verse.

Bound in original red cloth with gilt lettering and a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, this copy retains its vivid cover and includes an inscribed presentation on the title page:

“Happy New Year to Mildred Williams from the author — The Poet Hunter.”

A powerful and unusual Lincoln relic volume, merging literature, commemoration, and tangible fragments from the Great Emancipator’s world — a true artifact of American devotion and historical sentiment.

Comes housed in 14 x 20 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
