Lookout Mountain Souvenir Gavel Presented to a Florida G.A.R. Post

 

Wooden gavel sourced from a pine tree on Lookout Mountain, scene of the “Battle Above the Clouds” in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Souvenirs such as this were popular in the 1880s for veterans’ groups such as the G.A.R., who’s members had often been photographed there during the war. The gavel measures 9 ½” in length and has “Lookout Mountain” carved into one end and “Presented to Post 529 by J M Pierson from Lynn Haven Fla.” A wonderful piece of G.A.R. memorabilia from the Battle of Lookout Mountain.
