Lookout Mountain, Tennessee

Outstanding Civil War-era carte de visite depicting three men dramatically posed atop the rugged rock formations of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee — one of the most iconic landscapes associated with the Western Theater of the war.

The image captures the trio seated and reclining along a sheer rock outcropping, their civilian attire and relaxed posture contrasting sharply with the precipitous drop below. Each man holds his hat, and the carefully staged composition emphasizes both the daring height and the romanticized grandeur of the mountain setting. The dramatic verticality of the cliff face, combined with the soft atmospheric depth in the valley below, creates a striking stereoscopic effect despite the single-view format.

The reverse bears a boldly printed patriotic backmark featuring a waving American flag above the imprint:

“PHOTOGRAPHED AT GALLERY

Point Lookout,

Lookout Mountain, A.D. 1864

W. M. LINN, Prop’r.”

This imprint firmly dates the card to 1864, during the period when Lookout Mountain had become a place of national fascination following the Union victory there in November 1863. After the Battle of Lookout Mountain — part of the Chattanooga Campaign — the site transformed into both a strategic stronghold and a destination for soldiers, civilians, and photographers eager to document the now-famous heights.

Photographer W. M. Linn operated a gallery at Point Lookout on the mountain itself, producing souvenir-style views for soldiers stationed in the area and for visitors drawn by the mountain’s wartime notoriety. Images from this gallery are highly desirable as they combine wartime immediacy with early American landscape tourism.

This CDV represents not only a striking mountaintop view but also a tangible connection to one of the most celebrated Union victories in the Western Theater — “The Battle Above the Clouds.” The patriotic backmark further reinforces its wartime production and appeal to a Northern audience.

A dramatic and visually compelling Western Theater image with strong display appeal and excellent historical context tied directly to Lookout Mountain and the Chattanooga Campaign.
