Mah-Ko-Me-Te, A Musquakee Brave

Published by E.C. Biddle, Philadelphia, 1836 A striking hand-colored lithograph of Mah-Ko-Me-Te, a prominent Meskwaki (Fox) warrior, published in 1836 by E.C. Biddle of Philadelphia. From McKenney & Hall’s “History of the Indian Tribes of North America.” He is shown bare-shouldered, adorned with a scalp lock bound by feathered ornament, and wearing a green necklace with central pendant.

The portrait captures the quiet dignity of a Musquakee brave during a time when his people were under intense pressure from U.S. expansion. Historical Significance The Meskwaki (Fox Nation), closely allied with the Sauk, played a central role in defending their territories during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their alliance with Black Hawk during the 1832 Black Hawk War brought them into direct conflict with the U.S. military. Mah-Ko-Me-Te is portrayed here as a representative warrior of his people, preserving both the cultural traditions and visual legacy of the Meskwaki. Medium: Hand-colored lithograph. Date: 1836. Publisher: E.C. Biddle, Philadelphia. Condition: Scattered foxing; colors strong and well preserved.
