Description

McClellan Saddle – E. Waters Maker, Troy, N.Y. – From Gettysburg Estate

An authentic Civil War–era McClellan saddle, bearing the original maker’s plate reading “E. Waters / Maker / Troy, N.Y.” This firm was one of the principal government contractors supplying saddlery and cavalry equipment to the U.S. Ordnance Department during the war.

The saddle retains its original covering and stitching, with iron stirrup loops and clear evidence of long service. The McClellan pattern, designed for both practicality and endurance, was introduced in 1859 and remained the standard issue throughout the war. This example was purchased from a Gettysburg Estate sale located on Taneytown Road, adding a strong connection to one of the most iconic campaigns of the conflict.  The leather skirts are lacking apparently since use or immediately after the conflict as the body of the saddle shows a consistent patina throughout.
