Description

Merwin & Bray Contract Ballard Rifle for the State of Kentucky, Dated 1864

A scarce and highly desirable Ballard single-shot percussion rifle produced by Merwin & Bray of New York under contract for the State of Kentucky during the Civil War. These rifles were part of Kentucky’s emergency wartime procurement intended to arm Home Guard and state militia units at a time when standard Federal arms were in short supply. Surviving examples are notably uncommon, particularly those retaining original accoutrements.

This example is chambered in .44 caliber and features the early Ballard percussion ignition system with its distinctive dropping-block (lacking a small section of the lever), single-shot action. The barrel retains the correct Merwin & Bray contract address, with visible patent marking dated November 5, 1861. Metal surfaces display a smooth, even patina with well-defined edges, reflecting careful preservation and honest period use. The action remains complete and mechanically sound.

The walnut stock is solid and attractive, exhibiting typical Civil War-era handling wear with tight lines and no significant losses. Of particular note, this rifle retains its original leather sling, a rare and highly desirable feature. The sling shows deep, undisturbed surface patina with intact stitching, contributing significantly to the rifle’s overall completeness.

A scarce and historically significant Kentucky contract Ballard rifle, representing an important category of state-purchased Civil War arms. Complete, well-preserved, and enhanced by the presence of its original sling, this is a strong example suited for the advanced collector.
