Description
Model 1808 Conversion Musket – Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
This.69 caliber Model 1808 conversion smoothbore musket bears markings of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, reflecting state ownership and militia use during the early 19th century.
The lock and barrel breech are marked “CP” for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The conversion utilizes the threaded side bolster type, a common method used to convert carlier flintlock muskets to percussion ignition. The lock is marked “Evans / CP” at the rear of the plate.
The hammer is of the style often seen on civilian hunting rifles, likely produced by a local gunsmith during the conversion process.
The left side of the barrel breech bears inspection markings including an inverted “CP 300” and a “P” within an oval proof mark.
The barrel displays a dark gray patina with scattered darker spotting, while the side plate and other steel furniture retain a peppered gray appearance. Remaining steel parts show a brown patina consistent with age.
A repair screw is present in the stock below the rear of the lock plate. The sling swivels are missing, and the original swivel mounts were ground away long ago.
The ramrod retains its button tip, and faint remnants of a stamp remain visible on the top of the barrel, likely a marking associated with the City of Philadelphia.
